Let me start by saying that I have the utmost respect for former Justice Minister and Liberal MP Irwin Cotler. He is an intelligent, eloquent and highly respected politician. Recently, there have been rumours swirling that he may pull an Emerson and cross the floor to join the conservative cabinet.
To me, what's interesting is that he is the MP for Mount Royal, which is considered one of the safest, if not the safest, Liberal ridings in the country. This was the riding of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and former speaker Alan McNaughton. Unlike Outremont, which did flip PC in 1988, Mount Royal has remained solidly red since 1940 even during the darkest of times for the Grits. There is a high possibility that the people of Mount Royal voted for Cotler, not because he's Irwin Cotler, but because he's a Liberal. I am sure he's well aware of that. Furthermore, I don't think he's stupid enough to risk away, what basically is an ultra-safe, lifetime guaranteed seat in parliament. If David Emerson and Wajid Khan's experiences haven't been good enough lessons for him, then I don't know what is.

Cotler will never do this. He's deeply Liberal. And for the lifetime guaranteed seat in Parliament, I don't think Cotler needs that. He would have more fun and more money in the private sector.
Cotler lost alot of support in the last 2 elections.
he swpends more time travelling the world then he does in his riding or Parliamnet,
People are getting tired of an absent MP.
Cotler is a great MP and above the BS that goes on within LPCQ.
He ain't switching sides.
